In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, here’s an exclusive interview with multi-talented artist Emy Perez. Fusing Latin sounds with Flamenco elements, the singer reveals interesting details about her upcoming single “Maria.(Pre-save)

Emy is globally renowned for touring with big names like Shakira, Franco de Vita, and Eros Ramazotti. Likewise, her entire catalog includes collaborations alongside some of the world’s most celebrated dance music producers.

1 — First of all, congrats on the release of “Maria.” What makes this song so special?

“Maria” is the ultimate alter ego song. “Maria” is free, wild, indomitable, sexy, and mysterious. It’s my favorite song because it represents everything I am. “Maria” is the labor of a lifetime condensed into one song. What I’d like to portray musically finally coming to fruition. It marked the point where Hidde and I got to the point in our collaboration where we achieved perfect symbiosis. It’s legendary and I love it!

2 — What’s the story or inspiration behind this one?

The music was inspired by the good old tunes of my youth! I don’t mean to sound ancient, but the music was mad different in the 90s and 2000s. Mecano, Soda Stereo, Fito Paez, the Neptunes, Montell Jordan, Alanis Morissette, Alejandro Sanz, Eminem, Aerosmith, Dr. Dre, Lauryn Hill, The Fugees, Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Michael Jackson. The music I grew up with and shaped my music tastebuds was extraordinary.

And “Maria,” well. She’s what all women want to be. Brave and powerful, with that je ne sais quoi I don’t give a f+++ attitude!

3 — How did you come to collaborate with producer DFNRS?

My buddy and I have been banging out tunes for a while. Got massive cuts with huge LATAM artists coming up.

4 — What new things did you learn from this collaboration?
That it takes time to achieve greatness alone, but together, even though sometimes we don’t see eye to eye… We’re better, doubtless, and move faster.

5 — If you could work with any artist, dead or alive, who would it be? Why?

This is a horrible question hahaha! I’d go for Prince to write and play guitar with Jimi, get Ella to scat, Aretha to belt, sauce it up with some JB, have Myles and Armstrong solo, Ray Charles, and Duke Ellington on the keys… and get Whitney to sing!!! Pfff all in one band.

6 – Listeners could easily compare your sound to Rosalia. Do you take this comparison as a compliment or as a criticism?

Def a compliment but we ain’t the same. I think we just grew up with similar heroes.

7 – At times, “Maria” gives off some Macarena vibes. Do you think nostalgia changes the perception of music?

I don’t know if it was nostalgia but that was the song that was in my head before I started writing. I wanted something legendary! There’s nothing more legendary than Los Del Rio! The OGs used to be an old-time fam favorite!

8 – What do you hope fans take away from this new single?
I hope they love it as madly as I do! For some, I hope they dance their worries away, remember their childhood, how easy it was to party the whole night and just rave till dawn. For others, to be introduced to how movement can change your state of mind. Let positivity flow from head to toes.

9 – Can we expect more songs like “Maria” and “Zoom Zoom” in the near future or something totally different?

I evolve daily and write tons! I would say… expect the unexpected!!!

10 – You have been featured in a lot of popular dance tunes sung in English. Which one has been the most rewarding in your career?

There are so many dears to my heart it’s hard to pick just one, but if push comes to shove… Rewarding success-wise I’d say “Down by the River.” But if I had to pick one that really touched my soul, I’d say “Slow Motion” with my buddy Manuel Riva is one of my all-time favs.
