According to new lab research, acid compounds in cannabis can prevent the COVID-19 virus from infecting healthy human cells. This blocks a critical process for infection. As if the different uses of cannabis were not enough for various diseases, now it seems to be the salvation for the current bane of our collective existence.

This comes from a study by Oregon State University in the United States, published in the Journal of Natural Products and led by Richard van Breemen, who is a researcher at the Oregon State Center for Global Hemp Innovation, the College of Linus Pauling Institute and Pharmacy. According to research, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 and prevent the virus from entering cells and spreading the infection.

It is worth mentioning that particular spike protein is the same target that other treatments and vaccines use. While the rest of the components of the virus are the targets of other experiments to develop ways to prevent their accommodation in the body.

Orally bioavailable and with a long history of safe human use, these cannabinoids, isolated or in hemp extracts, have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2”

Although…no, smoking marijuana does not protect you from COVID-19. Most commercially available cannabis, whether sold in licensed stores or on the traditional market, has very little CBD or CBG. The marijuana can’t do anything for Covid-19 on its own. Cannabis will not be able to do anything if you smoke it instead of waiting for a higher amount to synthesize into a pill or an effective treatment.

These acids in the cannabis plant, are not substances like THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana), so they are safe to use. According to researcher Richard van Breemen, cannabis compounds are effective in blocking the entry of the alpha and beta variants, he is confident that the effects can extend to other variants.

This is a major step in undertstanding Covid-19 as well as fighting it. The identification of these acids was carried out using a technique based on mass spectrometry created by the team of researchers, who subjected several products of botanical origin to study. These forms of cannabis also turn out to be effective against new variants, the area of the greatest concern to doctors and governments.

“Resistant variants could still arise amid widespread use of cannabinoids, but that the combination of vaccination and CBDA/CBGA treatment should make for a much more challenging environment for SARS-CoV-2.”
